How it works
Begin with a U-shaped path through a 2 × 2 grid. Make four smaller copies, rotate them as needed and connect their endpoints. Each refinement doubles the grid width and height. The result remains one connected path.
Where it began
David Hilbert published this construction in 1891 in Mathematische Annalen, in a short paper about a continuous mapping from a line onto a piece of a plane.
